What the word names

When the word designates something precise, it designates assistance placed inside the tool where the work is done, triggered in the flow rather than in a separate conversation. Three properties then make the difference: the suggestion arrives at the moment the decision is being taken, it stays visible and refusable, and the person remains the author of the result. That is what places the copilot, by construction, on the side of augmentation rather than automation, and what makes it necessary to measure it as such. The shift relative to a classic assistant therefore has as much to do with location as with capability: not having to leave your document changes habits more than an improvement in the quality of answers does.

What it hides

What the word conceals is the gap in scope between the products that carry it. At one end, a completion that extends the sentence in progress and disappears if you ignore it. At the other, a system that reads several sources, calls tools and chains steps together to reach a goal stated only once, that is to say an agent wearing a reassuring label. The test that settles it bears neither on the interface nor on the quality of the answers, but on duration and initiative: does the system respond to a gesture, or does it pursue a goal over several turns without you intervening. The commercial value of the word lies precisely in that vagueness, since it hints at the second capability while committing only to the first.

In the field

In the field, three consequences deserve to be anticipated. Assistance placed in the flow is adopted more easily than a separate tool, because it demands no change of habit: that is a real advantage, and it is also the way in which uses that nobody has examined make their entrance. The cost of verification calls for particular attention, because a suggestion that comes back at every gesture ends up being accepted out of weariness, and acceptance is not validation. Finally, responsibility does not shift by so much as a millimetre: whoever sends the document answers for its content, and that is precisely where the cockpit metaphor has to stop.
